Helping Your Child in School
Recently, with parent-teacher conferences passing, many parents are presented with information from teachers that their child or adolescent may be experiencing some type of difficulty in the school environment. These difficulties can range from focusing and attending to coursework, acting out, feeling bored, struggling to understand a certain subject or struggling to maintain social relationships. As a parent, you want what’s best for your child but what do you do with this information given to you by your child’s educators?
Seeking professional guidance may be beneficial to help support your child’s needs. So how do you do that? That’s a great question, and my answer to you is to seek a psychological evaluation. Clinical psychologists use psychological tests and other assessment tools to measure and observe a person’s behavior. These evaluations involve gathering information through a clinical interview, speaking with the child or adolescent, a review of records and test data gathered through the results of standardized psychological tests. Psychological evaluations can help to understand a person’s strengths and weaknesses, identify potential problems with memory, cognition, emotional reactivity and to treat/diagnosis many different types of disorders such as dyslexia, depression, autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, cognitive or developmental delays, impulsivity, behavior problems or even giftedness.
Seeking a psychological evaluation can feel scary, however, having your child evaluated can promote an improvement in academic and emotional functioning. For more information about seeking a psychological evaluation, contact Knapp Psychological Services.
